Leonna Dalton Phillip Fund

She was a successful student and the apple of her dad’s eye.

John and Jean Dalton and their granddaughter, Leonna Dalton-Phillip, were being remembered Wednesday for all the good things they brought to the world.

Leonna had a bright future, her father said. She received straight A’s as a senior at Burke and had scholarship offers for college.

“She thought she might want to go to school in California,” he said. “We were just investigating that.”

Phillip described his daughter as a very loving person who worked at the Target store at Sorensen Park Plaza.

According to Leonna's Counselor at Burke High School, Ms. Smejkal, Leonna was many things to many people. She was a leader to drill team; she was a passionate accomplished writer; she was very responsible and met her responsibilities . An example is when she got a speeding ticket. She paid for and signed up for the traffic class, took the class and then told her mom once she took care of it. To her boyfriend, she was sweet and funny; to her teachers she was smart, focused and goal driven. She showed passion for education and was planning to attend a HBCU if she got enough scholarships, which she was actively applying for."

To her family she was a smiling, friendly, loving member and someone to be counted on.

"I also believe Leonna had an appreciation for courage and was striving to demonstrate courage in her own life; whether it was advocating for those who didn’t think they had a voice or having the courage to pursue good in spite of fears," said Ms. Lannan, Burke High Principal.

Jalisa, Leonna's mother, shared, "She made her mother very proud and she was proof in her mother’s eyes that she had made the best decision for her daughter.”

The Omaha Public Schools Foundation has established a Memorial Fund in the name of Burke High School student, Leonna Dalton Phillip. The OPSF Fund Drive will expire on January 31, 2018, and then all donations should be made directly to Great Western Bank. Please consider a donation.
